How to play
Every HWA puzzle gives you six numbers and a target. Your goal is to reach the target using the numbers and basic math.
The basics
- Tap a number to select it.
- Tap an operation: add (+), subtract (−), multiply (×) or divide (÷).
- Tap a second number. The result replaces the second number, and the first one is used up.
- Keep combining until you hit the target.
Results must be positive whole numbers. Subtraction has to stay above zero, and division only works when it divides evenly. You don't have to use every number.
Scoring
- 3 stars: hit the target exactly.
- 2 stars: finish within 5 of the target.
- 1 star: finish within 15 of the target.
Stuck? Tap Submit closest (then tap again to confirm) to lock in the number on the board that is nearest to the target. Made a mistake? Tap Undo to step back.
Daily and Unlimited
The daily puzzle has five rounds that get harder, and everyone gets the same puzzle on the same day. A new one arrives at midnight your local time. Finish all five rounds to see your score, copy a shareable result, and build your streak.
Unlimited lets you play as many fresh sets as you like. It doesn't affect your streak.
Tips
- Start with the biggest number and look for a multiplication that gets you close.
- Fine-tune with addition or subtraction once you're near the target.
- Work backward: ask which two numbers could make the target, then try to build them.
- Every puzzle has at least one solution. After a round you'll see one way to solve it.
Keyboard shortcuts
On a computer you can press +, -, * (or x) and / to pick an operation, and Backspace to undo.
